How did you get into selling wigs?

I noticed how much women spend on hair, and it didn’t make sense to me at first. You’ll see someone complain about money, but when it comes to hair, they’ll still find a way to pay for it. I started by helping people get wigs, just connecting buyers to sellers, nothing too serious. But as I kept doing it, I realized there was actual money in it. People were trusting me with their money, asking for recommendations, and coming back again. That’s when it clicked that I could turn it into a proper business.

When did money start feeling serious for you?

That was when I started handling my own expenses. Before then, money was just something that came and went, but once I had to start paying for things myself, feeding, data, personal needs, it changed everything. You can’t joke with money when you’re responsible for yourself.

What’s your earliest memory of money?

Getting money from my parents for basic things. At that time, I didn’t think about where it came from or how it was managed. It was just something I had access to. It’s funny because you don’t really understand money until you have to start making it yourself.

Who are your main customers now?

Mostly working-class women and students. People who want to look good but don’t want stress. A lot of my customers don’t even have the time to start looking for vendors themselves. They just want something reliable, good quality, and someone they can trust not to scam them.

How do you actually get customers?

Social media plays a big role. Instagram and WhatsApp are my main platforms. But what really helped me grow is referrals. Once someone buys from you and likes what they get, they’ll bring other people. I’ve had customers that bought once and then referred like three or four people. That’s how it really spreads.

What’s the most you’ve made in a short time?

During festive periods, it can get crazy. I’ve made close to ₦500k profit in just a few days. That’s usually when everyone wants to look good at the same time, so orders come in back-to-back.

How do you decide your pricing?

It depends on the wig itself, length, quality, and styling. Some wigs go for around ₦80k, while others can go up to ₦200k or more. The quality is what really determines the price, and customers can tell the difference.

With that kind of money coming in, what does your spending actually look like?

A lot of it goes back into the business. Restocking wigs is a big part because you can’t afford to run out, especially when demand is high. Then there’s logistics and delivery, because you have to move goods around, and that costs money too. Data is another one because everything is online, and then feeding and personal expenses. I also spend on looking good because, in this business, appearance matters. If you don’t look put together, people won’t take you seriously.

You said appearance matters. Have you seen that affect your business directly?

Yes, definitely. The way you present yourself affects the kind of customers you attract. There was a time I wasn’t really paying attention to that, and I noticed the difference. But when I started looking more polished, even the kind of clients that reached out changed.

Have you started investing or you’re still figuring that out?

I’m still figuring it out, but I’m looking into investing part of what I’ve saved.

What are the biggest challenges you face running this business?

Delays from suppliers. That one can be very frustrating. You’ve already planned your sales, customers are asking, and your goods haven’t arrived. It affects everything, your cash flow, your customers, your plans.

Have you ever lost money because of that?

Yes, in some cases. Either delays or things not going exactly as planned. It’s one of those things you can’t completely avoid, but it teaches you to be more careful.

Let’s talk about spending pressure. Do you ever feel it?

Pressure? I think it comes from me more than anything else. I like to spend, I won’t lie. But at the same time, I’m careful not to touch my actual profit too much. Funny enough, a lot of men that buy wigs for their girlfriends add tips, and that alone can cover some of my personal spending. So I try to leave my main money alone.

Has a customer ever tipped you in a way that surprised you?

Yes, there was one time that really stood out. A guy ordered a wig for his girlfriend, nothing too extreme, just something nice. We agreed on the price, everything was normal. After I delivered it, he sent extra money and just said, “for your effort.” At first, I thought it was a mistake, so I even asked him to confirm. But he said he just appreciated how smooth everything was and how I handled the order. What surprised me wasn’t even the amount, it was the fact that it happens more often than people would think. Some of them don’t even stress price, they just want something good for their babe and they’re willing to pay extra for convenience. That’s why I said those tips sometimes end up covering my personal spending. It’s not something I planned for, but it definitely helps.

What sacrifices have you had to make to grow this?

Reinvesting. There are times I want to spend more, but I have to put money back into the business instead. If you don’t keep restocking and growing, the business will just stay at one level.

If someone gave you ₦1,000,000 today, what would you do with it?

I’d probably add it to my savings or use it to push the business further. Or maybe eat barbecue first before thinking about it 😄

What are you working towards right now?

I want to grow the business more and have a proper physical store. Right now, I want something bigger and more structured.
