Fuel cost comes down to three numbers: how far you drive, how efficiently your car uses fuel, and what fuel costs where you fill up. The maths is simple. First find the fuel used by dividing the distance by your fuel economy, then multiply that volume by the price. A 240-mile drive in a car returning 32 MPG uses 7.5 gallons; at $3.60 a gallon that is $27. The same logic works in metric: a 400 km drive at 7 L/100km burns 28 litres, and at $1.60 a litre that is $44.80. The calculator above keeps every intermediate figure at full precision and only rounds the numbers it shows you, so a long trip does not drift by a few cents.

Two systems dominate the world, and they measure the same thing from opposite directions. Miles per gallon (MPG), used mainly in the United States, tells you how far you travel on a fixed amount of fuel, so a bigger number is better. Litres per 100 kilometres (L/100km), used across most of Europe, Africa, and Asia, tells you how much fuel you burn to cover a fixed distance, so a smaller number is better. Because they are reciprocals, you convert between them with a single constant: divide 235.21 by either figure to get the other. That means 30 MPG equals 7.84 L/100km, and 6 L/100km equals 39.2 MPG. An electric car that travels roughly 3.5 miles per kilowatt hour, charged at home for 15 cents per kWh, costs closer to 4 cents a mile, though public rapid chargers can be several times that and push the figure above petrol. The honest comparison depends on your local electricity and fuel prices, how much you charge at home versus on the road, and how many miles you drive each year. Use the cost-per- mile figure from this tool as your petrol baseline, then work out your electric cost per mile the same way and multiply both by your annual mileage. For most high-mileage drivers charging mainly at home, electric wins on running costs, but the gap narrows if you rely on public charging or drive relatively little.
