Sales tax is a percentage added to the price of a taxable good or service at the point of sale. To calculate it, convert the rate to a decimal and multiply it by the price. A rate of 8.25% becomes 0.0825, so a $200 purchase carries $200 × 0.0825 = $16.50 in tax, bringing the total to $216.50. The formula is short but easy to get wrong under pressure, especially when you are juggling several items or a rate with three decimal places like Missouri's 4.225%. Entering the numbers here removes the guesswork and rounds correctly to the cent every time.
tax = price × (rate / 100) • total = price + tax
Most of the time you start with a pre-tax price and add tax on top. But often you have the opposite problem: a receipt shows a final total and you need to know how much of it was tax. This comes up constantly when reconciling receipts, filing returns, or backing out tax from a price that was advertised "tax included." The common mistake is to subtract the rate from the total, which is wrong. If a $108.25 total includes 8.25% tax, the pre-tax price is not $108.25 minus 8.25% (that gives $99.32). Instead you divide by 1 plus the rate: $108.25 / 1.0825 = $100.00, so the tax was exactly $8.25. Switch this tool to reverse mode and it handles that division for you, showing the net price and the tax side by side.
net = total / (1 + rate / 100) • tax = total − net
In the United States there is no single national sales tax. Each state sets its own base rate, and then counties, cities, and special districts stack their own rates on top. The rate you actually pay at a register is the combined total of all those layers. That is why the state preset in this calculator is only a starting point: California's statewide rate is 7.25%, but a purchase in Los Angeles can exceed 10% once county and city taxes are added. Some states, like Colorado, have a low state rate of 2.9% but very high local add-ons. Five states — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon — have no statewide sales tax at all, though some Alaska localities levy their own. Because these rates change and depend on the exact delivery address, always confirm your precise combined rate with your state's department of revenue before you file.
Outside the US, most countries use a value-added tax (VAT) or a goods and services tax (GST) rather than a retail sales tax. The difference is where the tax is collected. US sales tax is charged once, at the final sale to the consumer, and only the end buyer bears it. VAT and GST are charged at every step of the supply chain — the manufacturer, the wholesaler, the retailer — with each business reclaiming the tax it paid on its own purchases, so the net effect still lands on the final consumer. For a single receipt, though, the arithmetic is identical: you add the rate to a net price, or divide it back out of an inclusive total. That is why this calculator works just as well for a 20% VAT in the UK, a 5% GST in Canada, or an 18% GST in India. If you are comparing prices or running a promotion on top of tax, our discount calculator handles the markdown side of the math.
If you sell products or taxable services, you may be required to collect sales tax, charge it clearly on every invoice, and remit it to the relevant authority. Whether you must register depends on where your customers are and whether you have crossed the sales threshold, known as nexus, in a given state or country. Physical goods are almost always taxable; services are taxable in some places and exempt in others. When you do charge tax, show the net amount, the tax rate, the tax amount, and the total as separate lines so the customer can see exactly what they are paying. Our invoice generator builds a clean, tax-itemized invoice you can download, and if you also need to estimate your own income tax bill for the year, the tax estimator gives you a quick projection. Sales tax rules change often and vary by jurisdiction, so treat these tools as a starting point and confirm the specifics with a qualified accountant or your local tax authority.
